Wunderling is all about breaking the rules and finding your own way in life. For starters, you don’t play as a traditional “hero” but as a low-level video game goon who has just unlocked the ability to jump. Your job is to find and capture the hero of the game known as “Carrot Man.”

You are revived by your master – the evil sorceress Kohlrabi, who seeks to tighten her hold on the Vegetable Kingdom and defeat Carrot Man once and for all.

It feels like a cross between SNES’ Super Mario World and a myriad of gravity-based puzzle games easily found on tablets and game consoles everywhere these days.

The puzzle-like adventures are addicting, and levels can be revisited for those players who would like to collect every hidden treasure. The nostalgic soundtrack by Ratvader is just fantastic. I truly feel like it’s 1991 when I play this game. The levels seem to get exponentially harder (I’m kind of stuck in WORLD 3, damn you physics of gravity!) so don’t let the ease of WORLD 1 trick you. You will need the best hand-eye coordination and determination to get far in this one.

Highly recommended.

Wunderling dropped on the Nintendo Switch and Steam (Windows-only) Thursday, March 5 for $14.99.
