Multi-award winning, prolific songwriter Diane Warren was asked to appear on William Shatner’s show, “I Don’t Understand”, to discuss what makes a hit song. Diane decided to let Shatner truly experience “what makes a hit song”!  When Diane arrived at Shatner’s studio, she, with engineer and recording equipment in tow,  had William Shatner recite the lyrics of her recent song “Somehow You Do” from the film Four Good Days (sung by Reba McEntire).  Shatner’s powerful spoken word interpretation of Elton John’s smash hit, “Rocketman” was the reason Diane Warren was determined to have this done.

The unreleased spoken word recording reached many of Diane’s friends including Oscar winning editor of Bohemian Rhapsody John Ottman.  In addition to Ottman being a film editor, he has scored dozen of major films as well as was a creative producer of Star Trek Discovery and directed an episode this season.   John is also a lifelong Star Trek fan and he loved the concept and offered to direct a music video.

The words and visual of the music video make for a “song of hope” that addresses the challenges we are all facing: whether it be depression, loneliness, fear, or exhaustion. The message of William Shatner’s comforting and inspirational interpretation of Diane Warren’s powerful song is that we will all get through whatever challenges we are facing!
